OBITUARY

MR H. G. SIEDEBERG Mr Henry George Siedeberg, who died suddenly yesterday, was born in Dunedin and educated at the Normal School and the Otago Boys' High School. On leaving school he was employed in the Victoria Insurance Company and then the Queensland Insurance Company, and later he commenced business as a financial agent. It can be said of Mr Siedeberg, without exaggeration, that he was one of the greatest athletes produced in the Dominion, if not the greatest. Endowed with a splendid physique, he concentrated on every sport he engaged in with energy, patience, and perseverance, until he stood out as a skilled exponent of that particular sport. He commenced his early training as a gymnast under Mr Oscar David, and then joined the Dunedin Gymnastic Club, to become one of the best gymnasts in New Zealand. He played cricket in his youth with the ’ defunct Carlton Club, and was then associated in turn with the Dunedin, Carisbrook, and Albion Clubs. He represented Otago on the cricket field on many occasions, and also played for the South Island and for New Zealand. He played Association football with the RoslynWakari and Northern Clubs, and was an Otago representative player. He played hockey for the Gymnastic Club and also represented Otago in this game. He was the champion billiards player of New Zealand on more than one occasion and a champion fives player. In later life he was an active member of the Dunedin Bowling Club, and was a member of Mr E. Harraway’s rink which won the New Zealand Rinks Championship in 1926. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. MRS E. J. McINNES The death occurred in Dunedin recently of Mrs Eliza Jane Mclnnes. She was born at Evansdale in 1866, being the second daughter of Elias and Margaret Jones, early settlers at Evansdale, who later resided at Warrington. Her father arrived in the ship Jura in 1858, and her mother (nee Fullar) in the Pladda in 1860. Mrs Mclnnes was educated at the Waitati School, and entered the Dunedin Training College after having served in several of the Dunedin schools as a pupil teacher. On leaving the Training College, she returned to Evansdale as assistant teacher, and later proceeded as sole teacher to Otiake, where in 1891 she married Mr Donald Mclnnes. After 11 years’ residence at Otiake, Mrs Mclnnes and her husband and family settled at Evansdale. In 1910 the family shifted to Clinton, staying there for the next 28 years, and in 1938 Mr and Mrs Mclnnes retired to Dunedin. Mrs Mclnnes was predeceased by her husband in 1940, arid of a family of 12, nine survive, together with 18 grandchildren. One son died in infancy, and the two elder sons, Messrs Murdoch and Elias John Mclnnes, who won the D.C.M. and M.M. respectively, were killed in action in the last war. The surviving members of her family are Messrs Alister Mclnnes (Dunedin), Donald Mclnnes (Invercargill), Thomas E. Mclnnes (R.N.Z.A.F.), lan Mclnnes (overseas), Archie Mclnnes (Dunedin), Mrs Wills (Green Island), Mrs Clark (Port Chalmers), Mrs Munro (Kaikorai), and Mrs Cross (Mornington). Of her seven sons, all have served in the last or the present war.

SENIOR-SERGEANT BONISCH (P.A.) PALMERSTON N.. May 21. The death has occurred of Senior Sergeant George Frederick Bonisch, who had been a member of the Police Force since 1911. His stations included Christchurch, Hokitika, Dunollie. Owaka, Dunedin, Wellington, Port Ahuriri, Pahiatua, Greymouth, and Palmerston North. In his younger days he was prominent as an athlete.
