SHORTAGE OF GAS
TEMPORARY LACK OF SUPPLY BREAKDOWN OF PLANT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 20. Precipitated by a minor breakdown in the steam boiler house at the Auckland Gasworks during the afternoon, but ascribed principally to the action of the retort house workers in limiting the charges to 16 an hour, a complete failure of the city’s gas supply occurred at 5 p.m. on Saturday. A decreased pressure was resumed soon after 7.30 p.m., but it remained weak in some districts until 9 o’clock, and many evening meals were spoiled in the course of preparation. The holders were still very low tonight, a little reserve having been built up during the day, and unless the position improves Aucklanders will be faced with a reimposition of the restrictions which have become all too familiar. \ The breakdown in the boiler house was caused by three boilers going out of action owing to a shortage of Waikato lignite coal. West Coast coal, which is of, a bituminous type, is not suitable for the fire boxes, and so could not be used as a satisfactory substitute.
