SOUTH CANTERBURY

SEVERAL RIVERS OVERFLOW (P.A.) TIMARU, May 20. After several days’ steady rain, all the rivers in South Canterbury were running high on Saturday, and there were prospects of a serious flood, but fortunately the weather improved on Saturday night, and the danger was past. Two or three rivers overflowed their banks, inundating a fairly large area, but the farmers had ample warning on this occasion to remove their stock to high ground, and no losses are reported.

The Main North road was blocked at the Temuka deviation, where at one time there was four feet of water. South of Timaru the Chinamen were evacuated from their market gardens, but other residents were not affected. There was a heavy southerly sea running on Saturday, but this abated today. and the rivers are falling quickly. The first heavy snow of the winter fell in the back country during the week-end, there being six inches at Tekapo on Saturday and a much heavier fall back towards the Alps.
