VETO ON AWARDS

GENERAL BLAMEY’S DICTUM

AUTHORITY QUESTIONED (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 19. "Authority belonging only to the King has beer! usurped . by General Sir Thomas Blarney,” said Mr A. G. Cameron (Liberal, South Australia), in the House of Representatives. He was referring to a statement by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr E. J. Harrison, that General Blarney had denied war correspondents the right to wear awards issued to them by General MacArthur.

Mr Cameron said that two wellknown rules governed the issue of these awards. First, no British subject should accept a foreign order or decoration without the King’s consent, and, secondly, when a nation was working as Australia had been doing since 1941, in close association with an' ally, awards were made by one ally to the troops of the other. General Blarney had apparently laid it down that the«e awards should not be made. “ The right authority,” he said, “Is the King, not the commander-in-chief.”
