OYSTER SUPPLY

INDUSTRY AT STANDSTILL BOATS HELD IN PORT BY BAD WEATHER (Special) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 26. The oyster industry is at present at a standstill, a long spell of bad weather having prevented the boats from going out. There is little prospect of the boats operating again before Easter. They are not expected to leave port to-morrow, and unless the weather improves they are not likely to venture out on Wednesday, which would be the last day, irrespective of the weather, on which they would operate before the holidays. It was explained here to-day that the shortage of oysters in the northern centres was not caused by the supply being diverted to the canneries. The weather was the only reason for the shortage. The oysters which should go north were not sent to the canneries, which used their own boats for trawling.
