NEW ZEALAND BISCUITS

ANOTHER LARGE ORDER Negotiations are being made for the manufacture in New Zealand of up to 15,000 tons of army biscuits to meet overseas orders. More than 40,000 tons of army biscuits have (says the Christchurch Press) already been supplied by New Zealand manufacturers. In 1940-41, 9537 tons of biscuits were produced by New Zealand makers, but demands for supplies for troops resulted in a switch of production from fancy to service lines, 16,801 tons being made in the following year, and 22,756 tons in 1942-43. The production figures for the current year are not available. Imports of biscuits had ceased before the war, since when the emphasis in the biscuit and confectionery industry has shifted from the production of goods for civilian requirements to the supplying of orders for the armed forces, both of New Zealand and of the United Nations. The destination of the latest order has not been disclosed, but it is believed that the biscuits now being ordered are for issue in the liberated countries.
