OBITUARY

MR JOHN C. McLEAN

The death occurred on Saturday morning of Mr John Cyril McLean at the age of 63 vears. Mr McLean, who was a highly esteemed citizen of Oamaru, was born in Dunedin and received his education at the Christian Brothers’ School. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department and was employed in the mail room, first at Dunedin and then in several other towns, including Thames, New Plymouth, Hokitika, and Oamaru. At Oarn- | aru he had 35 yeai-s of continuous service. retiring from, the department some years ago. Mr McLean was an efficient and courteous departmental officer. He was a talented entertainer, with a flair for impersonation, and he gave of his talents unstintingly to further worthy causes and the organisations of the town over a long period of years. He was the possessor of a good voice, and as a member of the Oamaru Operatic Society, he took prominent parts in many of the society’s productions. including " The Arcadians ” and •' The Belle of New York." In both the last war and the present war Mr McLean gave his services very freely as a member of concert parties, and as a leader of community sings for patriotic purposes. He produced several successful plays and shows, and his genial and kindly nature made for him many friends by whom he will be missed. He was a foundation member of the Oamaru Savage Club, an early member of the Friendly Bay Improvement Society, a member of the Phoenix Bowling Club, and of the Oamaru Trotting Club and the Oamaru Fire Board, and vice-president of the North Otago Highland Pipe Band. He married a daughter of the late Mr Robert Mahan (Miss Amy Mahan), by whom he is survived, and also by a daughter, Miss Betty McLean, of Oamaru, two sons, Messrs Jack McLean, of Oamaru, and Rex McLean, who is at present serving in the air force, and a sister. Mrs K. Saunders, of Wellington. There are two grandchildren.
