TRANSFERRED TO JAPAN

AUSTRALIAN PRISONERS SAVAGE PUNISHMENTS (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 23. There is evidence that Japan has been moving certain categories of Australian prisoners from outer occupied territories to Japan proper. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, announced this to-day. He tabled a report on Australians in Japanese prison camps, which he admitted had been partially compiled from secret reports. Transfers, the report declared, were being carried out under conditions “ appalling ” to western standards. There was complete disregard for Ohe health and safety of prisoners. In addition, prisoners were being taken to Japan proper, and some were being moved to Korea and Manchuria.' Mr Curtin said: “ The reports indicate that the mode of life of the prisoners is mainly Oriental, and one Chat would not be considered satisfactory according to western standards. In occupied territory discipline is of the usual brutal Japanese type, and savage punishments are imposed for quite trivial breaches of discipline.”
