IMPROVEMENTS IN DUNEDIN

Sir,—Transport replacements are obviously one of the first needs here, but interwoven with that is the paramount matter of greater population, the fate of which appears to be inseparable from the form of transport selected and its extent in route miles, and where. Might I suggest that some form of intensified advertising be decided on without delay, for the benefit of the north, where people seem to have a poor idea of this region and its manifest advantages. I know of some who have come to the city, but for want of ■facilities, or of knowledge, have gone away without visiting the places so well worth seeing. I take it that, as in the north, there are daily bus tourist trips, around 2 p.m., for visitors, to cover the principal sightseeing parts. Could we enlist the support of the film unit, to make a top-notch film of the surroundings of this city (aided by a narrator) for exhibition in all the northern cities? Let us wake up and get rid of the habit of talking the town down, for by so doing we, perhaps unconsciously, do ourselves and our interests a disservice. Adopt the north idea—that our city is the best place in New Zealand bar none—and if we hammer that idea out good and hard we wall get along. Admittedly, we get a few damp days, but that is trifling compared with our many advantages. We want for little, we have no gas stoppages as up there, electricity is not liable to fail now and again, we have firing (does not Wellington envy that!), and from my experience of all four centres, this is the finest. Its people are, anyway. If they want a job of work quickly factory production here can do it. So what are we waiting for? Let our young people get an interest in what is required, instead of leaving it to the other fellow. Can we form a Dunedin Fifty-thousand Club?' If so, perhaps we can start the ball rolling. We don’t want to interfere with good work now in train, but we have no right to be lazy and grouch if nothing happens.—l am, etc., Invigorate. Dunedin, March 22.
