SUPPLIES OF FOOD
MAINTENANCE ESSENTIAL EASTERN GROUP SUPPLY MISSION (P.A.) ' AUCKLAND. Mar. 22 “ Many people seem to think that with the end of the European war there will be no necessity for maintaining the same supplies of foodstuffs and other materials, but that is definitely not the case,” said Major-general R, P. Paken-ham-Walsh, C. 8., M.C., a member of the Eastern Group Supply Council and Central Provision Office, who arrived in Auckland to-day from India, via Australia. He was accompanied by Lieutenant-colonel J. H. T. Dowsett, who is also from India, and Major M. D Rhoden, an Imperial officer stationed in Australia. ~ xl _ A _ , “Mr Churchill has said that Great Britain would employ the full strength of the Empire in the fight against Japan,” continued Major-general Paken-ham-Walsh, “and that will necessitate the fullest contribution from all countries in the way of supplies. It is also the intention of the Allies to police Germany, and there is the task of rehabilitating the European countries which have been under German domination. These will set us big problems, and we shall all have to produce everything we can and there, can be no let-up for soiree time yet. It will be a mistake for people. to think that everything will be easier and all right as soon as the Germans are finally defeated.” Major-general Pakenham-Walsh last visited the Dominon about 14 months ago when he was here on a mission on“behalf of the Eastern Group Supply Council. His present visit, he said, was for the same purpose, namely, to sec about getting supplies from New Zealand for the use of forces in the South-west Pacific and Middle East areas. , The latter would include supplies for New Zealand troops serving in that area. He expected to be in the Dominion for about a week.
