WAR APPOINTMENT

SERVICEMEN OVERLOOKED RESOLUTION OF PROTEST A protest against what was described as the growing tendency for non-servicemen to be appointed to important positions arising out of war circumstances was recorded by the Executive Committee of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association at its monthly meeting last night. The committee particularly criticised the recent appointment of Mr C. Morrison as secretary-treasurer of the New Zealand Council of C.0.R.5.0. (Council of Organisations for Relief Service Overseas). It was stated that Mr Morrison was reported to be a conscientious objector. “This appointment is just one of a succession which has been made in respect of posts that should be the peculiar province of returned servicemen,” said Mr W. F. McQuin. “It seems that we are simply being shelved,” he added. “ The latest appointment caps a series of similar instances,” remarked the chairman (Mr D. Forsyth). “There have beep so many of these cases in which no one seems to know who makes the appointments, until we suddenly hear that someone has been appointed to a position either directly or indirectly concerned with the war.”

After other members had spoken in similar terms the committee adopted the following- resolution: “That the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association is astounded at the growing sequence of appointments of non-service-men to positions arising out of war circumstances; and that Dominion Headquarters be asked to make a vigorous protest against the latest appointment of a reputed conscientious oojector as secretary-treasurer of C.0.R.5.0. The association further asks headquarters to inquire whether such a position was advertised and/or offered to the Rehabilitation Department for. filling before the appointment was made of Mr C. Morrison."
