Vice-Regal A visit was paid to the naval establishments in Auckland yesterday by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall. The inspection started in the morning and finished in the latter part of the afternoon. Their Excellencies were the guests at lunch of the naval officer commanding in Auckland. Colonel F. L. Hunt, N.Z.S.C., of Army Headquarters, Wellington, is paying a short visit to Dunedin. Mr J. L. Johnston left for Wellington yesterday to attend meetings of the National Ham and Bacon and Pig Council. Mr C. U. Plimmer has been appointed a director of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd.

Notification of the appointment of Sir Francis Frazer to be Transport Appeal Authority from January 1 of this year to December 31, 1947, appeared in last night’s Gazette. Mrs D. H. Rogers has received word that her son, Major L, S. Rogers, M.8.E., has for the second time been mentioned in despatches. At a meeting of the Otago School Committees' Association last night, sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Mr J. W. Patton. The chairman (Mr N. D. Anderson) said that Mr Patton had been a member of the executive for many years, and his death would be a severe loss to the association. The Otago Harbour Board, at its monthly meeting last night, placed on record its regret at the deatn ot Mis Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, and carried a motion of sympathy. The chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson) referred to Mrs Fraser’s many interests and to her work on behalf of the welfare of women and children. Tributes to the contributions which Mrs Fraser had made to the culture of New Zealand were also expressed at yesterday's meeting of the Otago High Schools' Board of Governors, and the board decided to convey to tire Prime Minister its sympathy in the loss which he had suffered. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr J. Johnston, Mrs H. Brown, Mr H. Wilson, Mr E. A. Hollins, Miss L. Brown, and Mrs J. Ramsay for Wellington; Mrs W. Lord for Nelson; Mrs E. Young, Miss G. M. Powley and Mrs B. M. Quigley for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr R. K. Rutherford, Colonel Wilcock and Mrs C, A. G. Kohn from Auckland; Mr G. Benson, Dr Murray Falconer. Miss E. Baird, and Mr A. C. Johnston from Wellington; Mr and Mrs Andersen-Tyrer, and Mr McDonald from Auckland. Passengers who left for Invercargill were Mr F. Greenhalgh, Mrs A. Reid, Mr and Mrs N. Armstrong, Mr A. C. Cormack, Mr and Mrs N. Mclntosh, Mr G. McDonald, and Mr and Mrs Ander-sen-Tyrer. Reference to the death of Mr John McDonald, a former Mayor of the city, was made at meetings of a number of public bodies yesterday, and resolutions of sympathy with Mrs McDonald were passed. At the meeting of the Otago Harbour Board the chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson) referred to the fact, that Mr McDonald had been a member of the board for six years, and it was decided to place on record the board’s appreciation of his services during his period of office, from 1919 to 1925. Mr McDonald was at one time a member of the Dunedin Hospital Trustees and the Otago Benevolent Institution Trustees, and at the meeting of the Otago- Hospital Board last night members stood in silence as a mark of respect to his memory. The Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors, of which Mr McDonald was a former member, and the Dunedin Scottish Society, of which he was patron for many years, also passed suitable motions of regret and of condolence with the relatives. As the annual meeting of the Children's Rest Home Residential Nurseries, the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) spoke of the death of Mr McDonald, those present standing in silence.
