NAVAL VISITOR

SON OF FORMER FIRST SEA LORD (Special) AUCKLAND, Mar. 22. A member of the well-known British naval family, Lieutenant-commander George Dudley Pound, D.S.C., R.N., the elder son of the late First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, is at present visiting New Zealand. Bearded, heavily-built, and with a hearty manner. Lieutenant-commander Pound is still in his early thirties. He joined the Royal Navy about 18 years ago, ana has been at sea since 1930. Since the outbreak of war he has had considerable service in the Atlantic with the Home Fleet and in the Mediterranean. In 1941 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his part in the sinking of a submarine in the Atlantic. As commander of a destroyer, Lieu-tenant-commander Pound has done a good deal of work in the escorting of convoys, including some on the route to Russia. While in the Mediterranean he also took part in the Allied landings on the coasts of Sicily and Italy. His brother, Major Martin Pound, is serving with the Royal Marines.
