Miss B. R. McQueen, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs C. H. Ellis, of Maori Hill, will leave -to-morrow on her return to Wellington, Members of the Waltaki High School Old Girls' Association are reminded of the meeting on Wednesday next in the Pioneer Women's Hall, Moray place, when any old girl will be welcome. The women members of the staff of Messrs Wolfenden and Russell held a gift evening at the Savoy last Friday night in honour of Miss Ann Merchant, a member of the staff, whose wedding is to take place shortly. Miss Clarissa Tyndall has been appointed lecturer in science and hygiene at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, the position which was vacated by Miss M. Fitzgerald on her appointment this year as principal of the Otago Girls’ High School. The Provincial Executive of the League of Mothers has announced that it is organising a new branch at Anderson’s Bay, The inaugural meeting will be held on Tuesday afternoon in the Cameron Hall. An attractive creche will be provided for the young children. Group 4 of the Women’s Section of the R.S.A. held its monthly meeting in the R.S.A. social hall on Friday afternoon last. Mrs Osborn presided, and welcomed members and friends. Mrs Scott read an account of her daughter’s experiences as a V.A.D. The choir gave two choral numbers.

The Play-reading Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its first meeting of the year on Tuesday evening. Miss McCarthy (chairwoman) welcomed members, and referred to the great loss the circle had suffered by the death of Lady Ferguson, who had always shown the keenest interest in original and dramatic work. The play for the evening was a three-act comedy, admirably portrayed and produced by Mrs W. McPhail. Those taking part were Mesdames Arthur. Soper, McPhail, Stevenson, Galway, Justice, and Miss Helen Wilson. Mrs E. J. Anderson moved a vote of thanks to the performers, and supper brought the evening to a close. The president of the Otago University Women Students’ Club (Mrs F. G. Soper) and the vice-presidents (Mesdames C. E. Hercus, J. B. Dawson, J. C. Eccles, H. D. Skinner, and A. N. Haggitt, and Misses N. Ainge, P. Jackson, and B. Service) gave a party in the Crawfoyd Lounge on Monday evening as a welcome to the new women students of the year. The club committee—Misses Phyllis Jones (student vice-president), Barbara Graham (secretary), June Blake, Evelyn Bodkin, Patricia Chapman, Anne Don, Rhoda Mauger, and Sally Swainson —assisted in entertaining the guests and seeing that they met one another. During the evening short travel talks by Mrs Dawson, Mrs Eccles, and Mrs Skinner, and mimes performed by Mrs Harold Service apd Misses Rewa Begg, Mairne Ross, and Beryl Service, to an accompaniment sung by Mrs L. Beaumont, were much appreciated.
