BURNSIDE MARKET

BEEF PRICES HIGHER GOOD SALE FOR FAT SHEEP At the weekly sale at Burnside yesterday, the offering of fat cattle was approximately 287 head. Included in this entry were several consignments of good quality bullocks with a bigger percentage of cows and heifers than usual. The market opened on a par with last week’s rates, but as the sale progressed there was a decided Improvement of fully 30s to 35s a head on all quality cattle. Good quality cows and heifers were also keenly competed for, with the result that good prioes were maintained throughout. Quotations:—Extra prime bullocks to £23, prime £lB 17s 6d to £2O 17s 6d, medium £l6 7s 6d to £l7 12s 6d, and light from £l4 15s; prime heifers £ll 12s 6d to £l3 17s 6d. medium £9 7s 6d to £lO 2s 6d, and light from £8 7s 6d; extra prime cows to £l2 17s 6d, prime £9 7s 6d to £lO 12s 6d, medium £7 17s 6d to £3 12s 6d, and light from £6 12s 6d.

Fat Sheep.—-The yarding of fat sheep totalled approximately 2200, about the same number as last week. The .offering consisted mostly of medium-weight ewes, which sold fairly well throughout at prices fully above last sale's rates. Good quality butchers’ wethers sold a shade firmer than last week's prices, but medium descriptions were hard to sell, even at reduced rates. Freezing buyers kept

the market at an even rate for all freezing ewes. Towards the close of the sale early prices were hard to obtain, with the result that the sale became dragging. Quotations: —Extra prime wethers to 4ls 9d, prime 37s 3d to 39s 3d, medium 34s to 36s 3d, and light from 26$ 6d; extra prime ewes to 25s 6d, prime 20s 6d to 235, medium 17s 9d to 19s 6d, and light from 14s. Fat Lambs.—The entry of fat lambs was approximately 1400. With the exception of an odfcl consignment of good quality lambs, the bulk of the yarding comprised medium descriptions, with a big percentage of light and unfinished sorts. Butchers competed freely for all suitable lambs and with keen competition from exporters, prices were fully up to schedule rates. Quotations:—Extra prime lambs to 35s 6d. prime 29s 6d to 335, medium 20s 3d to 27s 6d, and light from 235.

Store Cattle.—A medium entry of store cattle was penned. Included in this yarding was a pen of well-grown three and four-year-old bullocks, and these were keenly competed for, realising up to £l4 10s. Average three-year-olds made from £ll to £l2 2s 6d, and 18-months-old to 2J-year-old from £8 15s to £lO 2s 6d. There was an over-supply of vealers, and prices were fully 20s to 30s below those ruling a week ago. Well-grown runners realised up to £9 15s; best vealers sold from £5 to £6 2s 6d, and medium from £3 10s to £4 ss.

Fat Pigs.—The entry of baconers was approximately 100 head. Competition was good throughout, and last week's values were well maintained. Extra prime baconers realised up to £B, prime £6 15s to £7 ss, medium £5 7s 6d to £5 17s 6d, and light from £4 15s.

Dairy Cows.—The entry in the dairy sections numbered approximately 35 head, with a fair proportion of good heifers. All good sorts sold freely, and realised values similar to those of last week. Good cows close to profit made £l3 10s, and heifers up to £l3 ss.
