TRANSPORT LICENCES

EX-SERVICEMEN'S NEEDS REQUEST TO No. 4 AUTHORITY A request that the No. 4 Licensing Authority might consider restricting the issue of ancillary users’ licences so that more returned servicemen might be absorbed in the transport industry, was made at a sitting of the Authority yesterday. The point was raised during the hearing of an application for an ancillary users’ licence from a contracting firm. Mr R. A. E. Smith, representing the Rehabilitation Department, asked the Authority to consider the fact that the granting of ancillary user licences in such cases might prejudice the chances of a returned serviceman being established in the industry. The amount of work that would be available for the holders of a number of such licences, he said, might be sufficient to provide a living for a returned man who desired to become an operator. “ It has been represented to me several times that such ancillary user licences should be refused, with a view to enabling an ex-serviceman to undertake the work with a licence for hire or reward,” said Mr V. Raines, the Authority. “ I consider, however, that it would be going too far to adopt such a course. I am sure that employers would engage returned men whenever possible, all other considerations being equal, but .the Authority cannot dictate to any firm what carrier it should employ. I cannot refuse a firm a licence to operate a service and then issue one to an ex-serviceman to do that work for hire.” The application was granted.
