BRITAIN’S HOUSING
OUTLINE OF POLICY
RUGBY, Mar. 20. The United Kingdom housing policy was set out in a White Paper published to-day. It states that the Governments first objective is to afford a separate dwelling for every family which desires one. For this purpose it is estimated that some 750,000 dwellings are needed. The second objective is to provide for tiie rapid completion of the slum clearance and overcrowding programmes already in the course of execution before the war. To replace the houses already condemned as unfit and abate overcrowding, a further 300,000 houses are needed.
The long-term objective is to secure progressive improvement in respect both of standards of . accommodation and equipment, and to attain the objective by a continuous programme of new buildings Up' Government hopes to increase tin' labour force in the building industry h> 1100,000 by the end of I lie first year after the end of Hie German war, and thereafter increase il up lo and beyond the pre-war total.
