OBITUARY

MR G. C. BLACK Mr George Corliss Black, whose death Occurred in Christchurch recently, had * full military life. Born in Dunedin, he joined the Otago Hussars as a young man. He left with the sth New Zealand Contingent for the South African War, returning to New Zealand, and leaving a second time as a sergeant-major with the Bth Contingent. With this body he served until peace was declared in May, 1902, and he was awarded the D.C.M. when serving with his regiment. For a period after his return he was employed by the New Zealand Railways Department at the Hillside Workshops. In 1911 he joined the Permanent Defence Staff and attained the rank of sergeant-major. Mr Black left New Zealand as a staff-sergeant-major with the Main Body (Otago Mounted Rifles) in 1914 and after serving in Egypt and on Gallipoli he suffered a break-down in health, and returned to New Zealand. He was later appointed to the Featherston Military Camp, but again a breakdown in health caused his retirement. He returned to live in Christchurch where he took a prominent part in bowling, the War Veterans' and Returned Services’ Associations. and in Masonic affairs.
