JAPANESE CITIES ATTACKED IMPORTANT NAVAL BASE WASHINGTON, (Rec. 11.50 p.m.) Mar. 19. “Carrier aircraft continued the attacks against Kobe, Kure, and other objectives in and around the Inland Sea to-day,” says Admiral Nimitz’s communique. Kure is Japan’s greatest naval base and presents a military target of unequalled importance. It is one of the strongest fortified areas on the whole of the Japanese mainland. Wave after wave of United States naval planes attacked the Osaka-Kobe area for at least nine hours . to-day. says Tokio radio. The radio says that Japanese aircraft continue to attack the American task force which was comprised of five groups of warships, including 15 carriers, when first sighted on March 18, 300 miles south of Shikoku. The radio claims that Japanese pilots on March 19 sank two warships and shot down 137 task force planes. Tokio radio also stated that a Meet of Allied submarines aiming to cut Japan's southern supply line has entered the China Sea. Jt added that Japanese planes are attacking. The radio reported that several mediumsized enemy planes bombed Hachijo Island, 200 miles south of Tokio. yesterday.
