OFFER TO AMERICA
PAYMENT FOR MACHINE TOOLS NEW YORK, Mar. 19. Australia has offered the United States 6,600,000 dollars (about £2,000,000) for all the American lendlease machine tools now in the Commonwealth. The book value of the tools is more than 30,000,000 dollars (about £9,3000,000). The reason for the decision is that the American Administration has prohibited the use of American lend-lease machine tools for Australian Lancaster planes and the Merlin engines programme. Neither programme has yet received the approval of General MacArthur or of the Foreign Economic Administration which controls lendlease in America. The offer of £2,000.000 was made when Senator R V Keane was recently in Australia Since then the United Kingdom has completed an agreement with the United States Government to purchase all the machine tools in Britain. Many Australian industries are completely dependent upon machine tools which are American property under the terms of lend-lease. United States officials are at present disinclined to accept Australia’s offer.
