NO ACTION TAKEN

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REFERENCE

The increases in the standard rates of pay announced this week were referred to at the meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night. The president (Mr A. P. Greenfield) said that while members had no quarrel with the payment of wages commensurate with the current living costs, they could hardly help being perturbed by the trend of things at the moment. It looked as if economic stabilisation was a “ successful failure,” and he was convinced the latest increase must have very far-reaching effects.

“ The cost to la'rge manufacturing industries must be enormous," Mr Greenfield said, “ and there must be an effect on production and costs. It will be interesting to see now what will happen to the Price Tribunal. I should say it will very quickly find itself faced with urgent demands for increased prices.” The meeting made no pronouncement on the subject.
