OAMARU RED CROSS

MONTHLY MEETING Mrs A. Smith Morton (president) occupied the chair at the first monthly meeting of the year of the Oamaru Sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mesdames Kemp and Doig, who are engaged on V.A.D. duty, and Mrs Gardiner, were granted leave of absence. A special parcel containing china and comforts given by the V.A.D.'s, together with a case containing 116 articles of clothing, was forwarded to the Polish children’s camp. It was decided to communicate with the Timaru and Temuka branches offering assistance to them after their trying flood experiences. It was stated that assistrnce was urgently required at the Bed Cross rooms, as four members were aosent on account of V.A.D. duty and illness. During the month a parcel conta.mng tobacco, pyjamas, and dressing gown was sent to Waipiata. It was reported that from May to December, 1944. 13 cases containing 1428 articles' of clothing and bed quilts were sent overseas. During February, 8- cases had been packed ready for despatch. These contained 438. articles. Since September, 643 miles had been travelled transporting sick and wounded, and at present five men were being taken to and from hospital daily. Contributions of clothing, mostly new, had been received from the following:—Kakanui Red Cross, Columba Church, Duntroon Junior Red Cross Mesdames Bee, Uttley, Doig, Wilson, Cowie, Nicola, Mclntosh, Morton, Stevenson (Weston), Sinclair (Totara), Gerrie (Herbert), Townswomen's Guild, Windsor Park Institute, Five Forks, Weston, Hampden, Kakanui, Waipnakarua, and Waiareka Red Cross Societies. During the month 186 skeins of wool, 20 yards of drill, and 11 yards of flannel had been gvien out, and 30 pairs of socks, and 125 articles of clothing had been received.
