UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the council of the University of Otago was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by the chancellor (the Very Rev D. C. Herron), Miss M. W. lay, Drs F. G. Soper and C. E. Hercus, Messrs W. R. Brugh, H. P. Kidson. A. Steel. D. C. Cameron, W. Downie Stewart, E. Partridge, G. R. Ritchie, and James Wallace. Chamber of Commerce Prize The secretary of the Dunedin Cham-, her of Commerce submitted an offer' from the chamber of an annual prize of £3 3s,'to be known as the Chamber of Commerce Prize. It was stated that the previous resolution that such prizes should be awarded only to male students had been rescinded.—The chancellor said he was pleased to.see that the chamber had decided to remove the restriction on women students. Improvements to the, University The report of the Works Committee was presented by Mr Steel, who said that during the recess 19 different contracts had been proceeded with. The sum of £I2OO had been spent on the Home Science Department, and the chemistry building was now almost completed. The sum of £450 had been spent on the library, and work had also been carried out in the Department of Modern Languages, the Physics Department, and the Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology Departments. Preparations were also being made to have necessary additions to the Dental School put in hand. Museum Staff Mr Kidson, on of the Museum Committee, reported that Miss Daff, of the Museum staff, had resigned her position on account of ill-health. The resignation was received with regret, Mr Kidson said, as Miss Daff had been a valuable member of the staff. —It was decided to write to Miss Daff conveying the council’s appreciation of her services to the Museum during the past 14 years. Scholarships The recommendation of the dean of the medical faculty that Fowler Scholarships should be awarded to C. B. Oxner and W. J. Prior was approved. - The Professorial Board recommended that the Charles Begg Scholarship in Music should be awarded to E. P. Drew, as J. C. Murdoch, to whom the scholarship had already been awarded, was not in attendance in Otago.—Approved. Appointments The following appointments were approved:—Assistant lecturer in the Prosthetics Department, Mr 1. Chirnside; tutor in obstetrics, Dr N H. North; part-time lecturer in household and social economics, Miss M. W. McHugh; lecturer in drama, Mrs Aiisa Stephens; library secretary-typist, Mrs E M Macnee; office assistant in Dental School, Miss Joy Stewart; junior assistant in registrar’s office. Miss June Valpy. The chancellor expressed appreciation of the action of Mrs Mason, who had been a member of the staff Of the registrar's office for 21 years until her marriage, and had assisted the registrar during a difficult period by returning to the office when the deputy registrar, Mr J W. Hayward, was in the armed forces. Mr Wallace endoised the chancellor’s remarks.
