SAWMILL WORKERS

SIX DAYS’ HOLIDAY AT EASTER (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 19. In a statement to-day on behalf of the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer said that war exigencies did not require any interference with the holidays to which sawmill workers were entitled. Consequently, provision was made under the recently gazetted Sawmilling Industry (Easter Holidays) Notice for the suspension of the directions requiring a 48-hour week to be provided for in the sawmilling industry so that employers and workers may cease work not earlier than the usual closing time on March 28, resuming not later than the usual commencing time on April 4.

Any employer or worker who desired to cease work earlier or recommence later than those dates, the Minister added, must receive the consent of the regional timber controller concerned. Consent would be given in all cases - where workers desired to take holidays to which they were entitled under the Annual Holidays Act, 1944.
