JAPANESE STRONGHOLD
ISLAND OFF BOUGAINVILLE CAPTURED BY AUSTRALIANS (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 19. Taiof Island, a Japanese stronghold off Sorakan Peninsula, in Northern Bougainville, has fallen into Australian hands. Taiof has been a potential threat to our northern force since tne crossing of the Genga River as it was known that the Japanese could observe our troop movements from this. It was also known that the enemy had several large calibre guns on Taiof which could be brought to bear onour forces on Sorakan Peninsula, into which our troops are penetrating.
