STEAM FROM RUAPEHU

A STRIKING SPECTACLE (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Mar. 19. Steam rising from Mount Ruapbhu, a distance of 75 miles, was clearly visible from here for a few hours this morning, the mountain being obscured later by haze. In brilliant sunshine the whole mountain stood out sharply against the blue sky. The column of steam rose a considerable distance before assuming cloud formation. A Taihape message states that this morning, with a clear sky for the first time in a fortnight, Ruapehu presented a striking spectacle—a billowing column of light brown smoke and steam rising thousands of feet in the air and then mushrooming into a cloud which fanned away to the north-east.
