RETURN TO SOUTH ISLAND
TRADESMEN TRANSFERRED TO NORTH Representations to have tradesmen retained in Southland instead of transferring them to the North Island were made to the Government recently by Mr W. M. C. Denham. 1V1.P., at the request of the Invercargill City Council. . Mr Denham has now received a reply from the Minister of Man-power (Mr A. McLagan), who states that tradesmen transferred from the South Island to the North Island were, at the time, required for urgent defence works. Because of the shortage of timber in the North Island, it had lately been the policy of the department to facilitate the return of these tradesmen to the South Island. The few South Island men still in the North Island were on high priority jobs, but district man-power officers had been instructed to transfer the men to their home districts in cases where the men applied for transfers.
