SERVICE STAFFS
HEADQUARTERS REDUCTION SYDNEY, Mar.lß. A drastic reduction of headquarters staffs in all States, but particularly in Melbourne, is understood to be planned: by the three fighting services, says the Sydney Sun’g Melbourne correspondent. It is stated that plans are being prepared for the transfer of a large number of personnel to permit others in the older age groups and with longer service to return to civil life. This comb-out is probably asso-» ciated with the review of staffs in all Federal departments which was recently made by a special sub-commit-tee of Cabinet. Administrative heads, who have had staff totals under examination for some time, have agreed that appreciable reductions could be made without impairing service efficiency. It is suggested that younger fit personnel should be diverted to the more forward areas so that ultimately the strain on those in operational establishments would be reduced.
