CALEDONIAN SPORTS

A LARGE ATTENDANCE DIVERSITY OF ATTRACTIONS IA sports meeting held to mark the eighty-fourth anniversary of the Caledonian Society of Otago, was held at the Caledonian Grounds on 'jiturday. The attendance of over 3000* spectators was the largest in recent years. The weather, which was threatening about mid-day, improved considerably, and the sports were held under pleasant conditions. There was a wide diversity of attractions, including a tug-of-war contest for a prize of £2O, cycling races, piping and dancing, athletic events, side shows, and a merry-go-round, the latter proving very popular with the children. The principal feature of the afternoon was the women’s marching contest. Three teams competed, two from Southland and one from Otago, and the marching ability of the contestants, together with their smart, coloured uniforms, earned wellmerited applause as they marched past the stand. In presenting Mr J. Brown's Challenge Cup to the Cadbury Fry Hudson team (the winners), the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) congratulated them on he high standard displayed. National music was supplied by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band and the Burns Pipe Band, and the official pipers for the dancing events were Messrs W. Milner, A. Stewart, and G. Todd. The athletic events, which comprised the mam portion •of the programme, were handled efficiently by officials of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and a. lengthy programme was disposed of expeditiously. Spirited competition prevailed in all the events, and despite a rather heavy track the times put up by some of the winners were exceptionally good. The standard of performance in the field events was also high.
