PELORUS JACK II

Recent visitors to the Sounds say that Pelorus Jack II is in very friendly form, leaping and diving around the launches which he pilots up the sounds. He went for three miles with one launch which was returning to Keneperu Sound from a fishing trip in Pelorus Sound, and gave a delightful exhibition. Mr E. A, Baggett (Wellington), a frequent visitor to the Sounds, said that Pelorus Jack II would “put his tail against the bow of a launch and let the boat push him along.” The porpoise would not be lured away from Pelorus Sound, and attempts to entice him into Keneperu Sound failed. He appeared to come out of Maori or Nikau Bay, which are directly opposite each other, said Mr Baggett. A Christchurch man took some moving pictures' of the porpoise. Porpoises are most active in Pelorus Sound just now. Once a leap of eight feet clear of the water was observed, and three porpoises allowed passengers of one launch to roll them over by their dorsal fins. They showed no fear, and came back for more.
