LOSSES ON IWO JIMA

4000 MARINES KILLED WASHINGTON, (Rec. 11.20 p.m.) Mar. 15. Aboard his flagship off Iwo Jima, Vice-admiral Turner told a press conference that American deaths on Iwo Jima had been under one-fifth of the Japanese. Indicating that 4000 marines were killed Admiral Turner said it was unbelievable that the deaths of marines were so low in view of the fanatical enemy’s intricate and thoroughly organised defences. The Americans also suffered considerably in the air and on the sea. The marines’ achievement deserves the highest rank in military history. “ The Fifth Division to-day continued to reduce further the area field by the enemy at the northern tip of Iwo Jima.” states Admiral Nimitz’s communique. “ Our forces encountered intense smallarms. and mortar fire in that sector all day. Mopping-up operations continued in the Third and Fourth Division zones. Army and navy planes attacked Chichi Jima and Wake Island.”
