AMERICA’S ATTITUDE

CABINET IN EXILE RECOGNISED WASHINGTON,- Jan. 5. The United States has reiterated -its recognition of the Polish exile Government in London, in spite of the Russian recognition of the Lublin regime. A State Department, spokesman said the United States received advance notice of the Soviet action and pointed out that there was nothing to add to the statement by the' Secretary of State, Mr E. R, Ste,ttinius, on January 1, that “ this Government con-, tinues to ..maintain formal diplomatic relations with the Polish Government in exile.” , v - ; The Associated Press says that although the Russians’ action was not unexpected, Washington diplomatic re-, action was “the worst Has happened;” The general -view in Washington is that Marshal Stalin could .-wait no longer in recognising the Lublin regime because of the imminence of the great Russian winter offensive to liberate all Poland. Russian recognition "freezes” the worst split to date in the United Nations’ ranks.j-It puts Russia in firm support of a regime radically opposed to the'exiled Polish Government, which has been supported bv both Britain and America. It also represents a defeat for those in the British and American Gqvernments who sought, unofficially, ih the past few days ,to,, persuade : the ,Russians to delay, possibly until after the Big Three meeting, any formal announcement of recognition of Lublin.
