CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON

MATCH ENDS IN DRAW (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7. Often guessing wrongly on a tricky two-paced pitch, the Canterbury batsmen could do little with the keen Wellington attack at Lancaster Park on Saturday, and the side was all out shortly after 4 o'clock for 233—69 runs behind Wellington on the first innings. Cromb and the 18-year-old Leggatt put on 112 for the first wicket on Saturday morning with a clever mixture of aggression and defence. They batted surely and confidently under dampish conditions that forced the bowlers to work hard for any spin or devil. It was a different story when the sun came out after lunch and turned the pitch into something for bowlers to dream about. This was particularly so at the south end. Cromb, who was dismissed at 126, made 95, his score including nine 4’s and one 6. After he had gone, the next four wickets—Hadlee, •Waine, Anderson, and Uttley—fell for the addition of fewer than 40 runs to the score. Mcßae and Butterfield offered a bright and breezy resistance to the increased menace of the attack. and the crowd cheered as Mcßae hoisted two ft’s over the fence. But the end was not long delayed, speeded up by Wellington’s clean, crisp fielding. When stumps were drawn, Wellington had made 84 for six in the second innings against an alert and well-managed attack. The match was drawn; with the first-innings honours to Wellington.
