ROAD ACCIDENTS LAST YEAR

ORDERLY HOLIDAY TRAFFIC Preliminary figures prepared by the Transport Department show that 139 persons were killed in road accidents last year. During the previous year the road fatalities numbered 145, and in 1942 there were 167 deaths.

Eleven lives were lost through motor accidents during December, five of those being in the holiday period. Nine of the month's fatalities occurred in. the North Island and only two in the South. Four accidents took place on the open road and seven in the builtup areas. In December, 1943, there were 17 fatalities.

According to reports received by the Commissioner of Transport, traffic in all districts during the holidays was very orderly. The traffic inspectors reported comparatively little speeding or dangerous driving. Although many of the highways were carrying extra traffic at Christmas and Ifew Year, this was spread over a number of days and there was a marked absence of any pre-Christmas rush. In general, motorists heeded the need to conserve petrol and tyres, and travelled in reasonably leisurely fashion.
