RETREADING OF TYRES

PLAN TO ELIMINATE DELAY The new procedure which has been adopted in connection with applications for the retreading of motor tyres has been designed to eliminate the delay occasioned through motorists having to wait while an application was forwarded to a local oil fuel controller and returned with his approval before the work could be done. Now, the responsibility is placed on the authorised dealer, or retreader, to certify that he has inspected the oil fuel licence of the applicant and to confirm the statements made in the application. This having been done, the retreader does the work and then forwards the application, with the certificate, and another signed by himself giving the grade, size, and serial number of the tyre retreaded, to the Factory Controller, Wellington. In other respects, practically the only change from the system which existed before January 1, the date of coming into operation of the new procedure, is the provision of a very much simpler form of application. The procedure applies only to applications for retreading and not to those for now tyres, for which application must still be made to the Ideal oil fuel controller, as formerly. Only holders of continuous licences are able to have tyres retreaded, users of ordinary coupons whose tyres wear out being obliged to acquire others or to take their cars off the road. It is not considered by dealers that the.new procedure will lead to any substantial increase in applications for permission to have retreading done. They said that, any increase might lead to delays, as the amount of material available was limited.
