RE-UNION IN ITALY

CENTRAL OTAGO SERVICEMEN

Soldiers from Central Otago serving in Italy recently took advantage of a lull in active operations to hold a icunion at a town in Central Italy. The arrangements were in the hands of a committee comprising W. French (Lawrence), H. Annan (Clyde). W. Becker (Oturehua), W. Robinson, i . Ryan, and C. Rooney (Alexandra). Many difficulties had to be surmounted in procuring a building, cups and glasses, and refreshments for the occasion. The use of an old school was finally obtained, and forms were put to good use and desks nailed together for tables. Lighting was supplied by numerous tank batteries. A piano was procured after a journey ot about 180 miles. There were about 130 men present, and the chairman for the evening was \V French who was assisted by W. Robinson as M.C. So that everyone might become acquainted, it was decided that each man should stand and call ou: his name and district. An appropriate toast list was honoured, and after the serving of supper those present were afforded the opportunity of renewing old acquaintances. Musical and vocal items were presented during the evening, and prominent among the performers were D. Maharey. of Dunedin, and W. Becker ot Oturehua. The proceedings closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. The reunion was considered by everyone to augur well for the activities of the R.S.A. in New Zealand after the war. Manv references were made to the faithful work of the womenfolk at home, and praise was bestowed on the helpful activities of the various patriotic guilds.
