RANFURLY

The Weather.—The month of December, like the two preceding months, was unusually wet for this district. Rain was experienced on 20 days altogether, for a total fall of 5.93 inches. This amount brought the total of the last three months of 1944 to 9.95 inches. The total recorded for the year is not available. The New Year has also opened wet. Light rain commenced on Tuesday night and continued for nearly 36 hours, the total registered at 9 a.m. on Thursday being 60 points. Vital Statistics.—The vital statistics for the year 1944, as received from the local registrar, show an increase of 10 in births and a slight increase in the number of marriages. Deaths show a decline of 9, but this may be accounted for by the fact that the Hyde railway accident occurred in the previous year. The following are the figures, those for 1943 being given in parentheses:—Births 49 139), deaths 17 (26), marriages 7 (5). Bowling.—The Ranfurly rink, holders of the Fowler Challenge Cup, survived a challenge from a rink from Orangapai last week-end. The holders had a comparatively easy win by a margin of 20 points, the scores being: Drake (s.) 30, Brockie (s.) 10. .
