CRICKET

WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. Conditions were unpleasant for the opening of the representative cricket match between Canterbury and Wellington at Lancaster Park to-day. An overcast sky. accompanied by a drizzle, handicapped both the bowlers and the fieldsmen. Wellington won the toss and batted practically all day to score 302. At stumps Canterbury had scored 26 runs without loss. „ , Wellington put up an excellent performance after a bad start, five wickets having fallen for 67 runs. Duffy, who opened, played a big part for Wellington, and lus knock of 61 was a solid one. In spite of two chances, he and Chapman added 101 for the sixth wicket. The latter was very lucky at the start, but, he settled down to give Duffy solid support At the luncheon adjournment Wellington had lost five for 105, and at tea nine for 215. Hoar and Allen proved a stumbling block for Canterbury, the pair adding 87 for the last wicket. A . Mcßae’s bowling performance must be ranked as his best in representative cricket.
