MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE

The fortnightly meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre was held last night. The president (Mr S. Brown) occupied the chair. The performance of Miss Ngaire Lane, of the Kiwi Club, in swimming 220 yards backstroke in 3min 9 3-ssec at the Otago championship meeting in December was approved as an Otago women’s record. It was decided to invite V. Vial, of Invercargill, to compete in a special 220 Yards Invitation Breaststroke Race at the Otago Centre’s carnival on January 13. Vial is the New Zealand 100 and 220 yards intermediate breaststroke champion. Permission was granted for Miss N. Lane to make a special altempt on her own New Zealand 100 yards women’s backstroke record of 74 2-ssec on the same date. An invitation was received from the Spreydcn Amateur Swimming Club (Christchurch) for members of the Otago team to compete at a carnival in Christchurch on February I.—lt was decided to inform the club that it would be impossible to accede to its request, but. that the centre was interested in a proposal that a competition similar to the Ncrdon Cup contest between Wellington and Canterbury should be instituted between Otago‘and Canterbury. This contest consists of water polo, swimming, and diving events. The secretary of the Oamaru Amateui Swimming Club (Miss Audrey Wilson) wrote agreeing to hold the country clubs championship meeting in Oamaru on the afternoon of February 17. It was decided ’o arrange a water polo match between “ Possibles ” and Probables ” at the centre carnival on January was granted for members of the Otago swimming team to compete at a carnival at Milton on January 13, subject to suitable transport arrangements being made, apd it was also decided that the team should compete at the Balclutha Club's carnival on February 10 if similar arrangements could be made.
