ANGLING NOTES

JUNIOR FISHERMEN During the holidays a party from the Junior Anglers’ Club travelled to Conical Hill, on the Pomahaka River, and spent a very enjovab’c eight days, fishing, shooting and bathing. Hut accommodation had been provided, and there was a plentiful supply of firewood. Everything at this camp looked favourable for the lads having a good time. The party was in the charge of some members of the Senior Club, and all met prior to the departure of the 8.33 train for the south. Heads were counted, and equipment was collected. , . The youths quickly settled down to camp life. The days were fine, and when fishing was slow, bathing was popular. Eeling, too, came in as a popular pastime, some out-sized eels being captured. Then there was the old coal pit pond of several acres, which was reported to contain some “old men” trout. None of the latter, however, were caught, but a record number of perch was taken from this water, 20 or 30 a day being a common tally. Most of them were returned to the water, but they gave good sport to the lads. All the members of the party caught some fish, up to SJlb, but a terrific thunderstorm—the worst experienced for years —accompanied by heavy rain, affected the river and made fishing out of the auestion for the final two days. Saturday, bright and early, found the party packing up. each one sorry to leave the delightful surroundings.
