TERM OF IMPRISONMENT

BOOKMAKER SENTENCED

(PA) AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. Pleading guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, Norman Landale Tremain, aged 32, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by Mr J. Morling, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The police stated that Tremain had for some time been accepting bets in the bar of a city hotel. He had been repeatedly warned about bookmaking as late as Saturday last. He did not cease, however, and yesterday was arrested when he had £6l in his possession, but no betting material. Counsel for the defendant said that Tremain was in ill-health and incapable of doing manual work. It was only economic necessity that caused him to carry on the practice of bookmaking, but he would now give it up. The magistrate said that if ill-health was to be an excuse for committing an offence, then it would be impossible to enforce the law.
