THE STATE DEPARTMENT
PROPOSED ASSISTANTS
APPROVAL REQUESTED
WASHINGTON, (Rec. 0.15 a.m.) Dec. .13. The Secretary of State, Mr E. R. Stettinius, is asking the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to approve the six State Department assistants' the President and he have chosen. He expressed the • opinion that all of them would whole-heartedly support the principles and objectives of United States foreign policy. Answering questions by the committee, one oj those recommended, Mr Joseph Grew, said: “We cannot say now whether the Emperor of Japan will be an asset or‘a liability. I have never hsld that the Emperor should be retained and have never held that he should be eliminated. I think the situation should be left fluid until we get to Tokio to size up the situation.” Mr Grew told the committee that he favoured the shipment of scrap iron and oil to Japan before the war because it was common sense. The United States was not then prepared for war. “If such a step as an embargo is taken we must be prepared to back it up.’’
