BASEBALL
An. attractive programme has been arranged for the conclusion of championship baseball play for the 1944 season at Bathgate Park on Saturday. Diamonds, the youthful team which beat Air Force last Saturday, will play City United, which has not lost a match. Diamonds have such promising young players as Murphy, Cleveland, Orr and Wood, and the star players for City United will be Birtles, Booth, Beck and Freeman.
There will be two curtain-raisers, the first game being Spitfires v. Tigers, at 1.30. Tigers, who are now a good side, will have two good batters in Fletcher and Crawford, while Letherby, at centre field, is probably the longest thrower in the league. Spitfires have a very fine battery, Martin having shown much improvement at catcher, and Donaldson being one of the most promising pitchers in Dunedin. The main curtain-raiser will be played at 2 p.m. between Sargoods, who have won both championship games, and Air Force, usually a strong batting side.
