ST. CLAIR TRAGEDY
SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN 'An exhaustive but unsuccessful search has been conducted during the past two days for the body of James Purdie, who is believed to have been drowned when he endeavoured to swim ashore from a canoe off the St. Clair beach on Sunday afternoon. Purdie's companions in the canoe. William Wallace and Miss Joyce Matheson, reached the shore after a severe swim, but nothing further has been seen of Purdie since they spoke to him some time before they landed. Planes of the Royal New'.Zealand Air Force, parties of police, and groups of volunteer helpers have assisted in the search for the missing man. A naval launch, manned by naval personnel. was chartered by members of the Police Force yesterday to patrol off the St. Clair beach and as far south as Taieri Mouth. After a rigorous day spent in adverse conditions the party returned in the evening without having seen any sign of Purdie’s body.
