DRIVE ON HERTOGENBOSCH

ANOTHER ATTACK OPENED « THREE SPEARHEADS CLOSE IN (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 23. The British Second Army has launched another attack on the west flank of the salient in Holland, and is advancing towards Hertogenbosch on a 12-mile front. The new assault began at one minute past midnight to-day after an artillery barrage from 200 Allied guns. The attack is going well, particularly on the right flank. The other British thrusts towards Hertogenbosch, which began yesterday, are also making good progress. The most northerly push went forward one mile last night, while the second, from the east, has carried British infantry to within three miles and a-half of the town. Allied forces are now closing in from three sides.

' If it were not for the difficult country, which is all in the enemy’s favour, the Ge'rmans would be in serious trouble. Hertogenbosch is one of the major strongholds in the line linking the front with Rozendaal and the Scheldt Estuary. v British and Canadian troops north of Antwerp are only five miles from Rozendaal, and further west the Canadians who captpred Breskens, in the Scheldt pocket, have advanced another mile and taken a fort, the guns of which dominated the Scheldt Estuary.

The American Third Army, attacking over a five-mile front

north of the Rhine-Marne canal, which is 20 miles east of Nancy,

have advanced two miles. The Americans, in heavy fighting x north of Bruyeres, captured the village of Brouvelicures, on the road through Saint Die to the Saint Marie Pass, in the „ . Vosges Mountains.
