THE CAULFIELD CUP
COUNSEL BEATS LAWRENCE (Rec. 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. Coming with a paralysing run in the last half-furlong, Counsel yesterday won the 1944 Caulfield Cup by a narrow margin from the top-weight, Lawrence. The first and second place-fillers shared equal favouritism. Lawrence went ahead in the straight, but Counsel’s final burst took him to the front, and although Lawrence was coming again at the finish he could not get up. Huntingdale, a long-priced outsider, was a close third. The race was run at a great pace. Counsel was a long way back early, but moved up gradually until he was with the leading division at the home turn. In the straight four horses at various times seemed likely to win the race, which was considered to be the most open of Caulfield Cups in living memory. Counsel and Lawrence, in particular, registered outstanding performances, but Lawrence’s was the better Melbourne Cup trial. He was making up ground again at the post. Following are the details:—
Caulfield Cup.—Counsel, 8.12 (Breasley), 1; Lawrence, 9.3 (Williamson), 2; Huntingdale, 7.4 (Cowper), 3. Twenty-eight started. A neck, half a length. Time, 2min 29isec.
