ACCORDION BAND
CONCERTS BY CHRISTCHURCH VISITORS
An enjoyable concert was given by the Excelsior Piano-Accordion Band, Christchurch, before a large audience in His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday night. The band, which has 23 performers, is the largest combination of its kind in the'Dominion. The proceeds will be given to the Merchant Navy Hospitality and Welfare Fund, and the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron, thanked the conductor, Mr H. F. Lamport, and the performers for their -fine effort. In addition to 10 selections by the band, the. following contributed to the programme: Shirley Chapman (songs), the Harmony Trio. Florence Dalton and Beryl Windsor (sketches), Walter Scott (piano-accordion solos), Pat Olliver (monologues), Norman Havard (banjo solos), the Small Brothers (tap duos), Bill Middlcmass (songs), and Merle Ayers and Shirley Chapman (vocal duets).
A very large attendance of the public heard the band in another programme at the Botanic Gardens yesterday afternoon. The warm weather ensured the success of the recital, and the record collection of £9l was taken at the gates.
The band will give a farewell performance in the Concert Chamber tonight, commencing at 8 o’clock. Assisting artists from Christchurch will contribute to the programme.
