SETTLEMENT ON FARMS

250,000 ACRES ALREADY EARMARKED

(F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. Discussing the question of the settlement of ex-servicemen on farms, the Minister of Lands, Mr C. F. Skinner, said during the consideration of the estimates in the House of Representatives to-day that it was necessary at the present time to buy productive farms. The Lands Department already had 250,000 acres of land earmarked for settlement. Over 100 blocks were ready for use, and a number of men would be settled next year. “We are negotiating with dozens of owners of large areas in various parts of the country,” he continued. "About 100,000 acres are involved."

The Minister said there was no other country in the world attempting to settle men oh the land while the war continued. The Australian and Canadian Governments had said that they would leave that until after hostilities had ended. It was useless for members to say that settlement was only a question *of building a few houses and bridges.
