NOTES ON THE RUNNING

‘ St. ‘ Nattar and Lisheen led out from Red Prize, Listen In, and Salabond In the Novice Handicap. St. Nattar had Lisheen’s measure at the turn, but Red Prize drew up and won by four lengths from St. Nattar, who beat Listen In by a head. Salabond, Bath Slipper, Lisheen, Plutocrat,; and, Sumra were next. The Wakarl Hurdles Swordstlck fell at the first Jump In the Wakari Hurdles. Astros led Nightcalm out of the straight, these two being six lengths clear of Albino, who was joined by Jack o’ Lantern. Nightcalm and Astros led up the rise, where Albino and Jack o’ Lantern were closing up. Albino leu Jack o’ Lantern into the straight, and came on to beat him by three lengths. Big Joe was four lengths away, with Astros and Night Pal next. The Kaikorai Handicap In the Kaikorai Handicap Good Cast, Grand Forest, Chicago, and Wild Cry were smartest out, and Battle Robe ana Benbecula were slow to move. Benbecula, Dash o’ Dublin, and Bowmore fell when racing between the five and six-fur-long posts. Grand Forest led up the rise with Chicago, Good Cast, Wild Cry, Dearo, Girl Friend, and Lex in close order. Grand Forest led into the straight .and drew out to beat Wild Cry by three lengths. Lex was two lengths away third, and then came Good Cast, Crinkle. Chicago, Dearo, and Royal Brief. - - .The Ranfurly Handicap Arctic Dawn was badly left at the start of the Ranfurly Handicap, and Royal Lancer led out of the straight with Trlng, Kohara, and Sal’s Pal, Once, in the back ’stretch Doubleack went up to the leaders, and Sal’s Pal. fighting his rider, dropped back. Doubleack led round the far turn, and Arctic Dawn had moved up close to the leaders. Tring, Arctic Dawn, Kevin, and Sal’s Pal led* into the straight. Tring, was in charge as, they straightened for .home, and; stalling;pff Kevin, beat him by a length. • Doubleack was two lengths away third, a head in front of Sal’s Pal; Arctic Dawn, Fair Trial, and Royal Lancer followed the placed lot. Air Ace: soon took charge in the Dunedin Guineas and led Bonny Flight, Joygiver, and Pensacola along the back. Joygiver then went Into second place, Just In front of Pensacola and Bonny Flight, 'Air Ace led up the rise from Joygiver, with Pensacola and Bonny Flight close up. Pensacola was in a bad position on the rails. In a good finish Air Ace won by, a neck from Pensacola, who beat Bonny Flight by a length. Piccolo was Joygiver dropped back in the final' furlong. Taierl Steeplechase Safe Light and Sir Percy set the pace in tlie Taieri Steeplechase from Donadea and Timber Topper. Safe Light and Sir Percy, racing in company, led over the stand double and into the back stretch. Timber Topper moved up to third place behind the leaders, and Donadea cojrimenced to tire. Timber Topper jumped away from Safe Light and Sir Percy at the-water jump, and came away to win by 20 lengths from Safe Light, who beat Sir Percy by 12 lengths. Shadow Boy was fourth. The McLean stakes , Gold Spur was first out In the McLean Stakes, but was soon joined and headed by Psalm. Sword Dancer, Victory Flight, and Hansel also became prominent. Psalm led Gold Spur and Loyal Lady Into the straight and ■' then the first-named drew away to win by five lengths from Loyal Lady, who beat Gold Spur by three lengths.- Hansel was fourth, and then came Montezuma, Princess Anne, Western Front, Eudora, and Sword Dancer, The Telegraph Handicap Latest Song was left in the Telegraph Handicap after giving a lot of trouble. High Play, Silver Lily, Winning Flight, John Gay, and John o’ London led the way. ‘High Play led round the,top and into the straight, where John Gay put In a claim. High Play failed to stall off John Gay: Who finished better than the Croupier gelding and made a dead-heat. John o’ London was third and was followed by Sister Sal, Lyndall, Aurora Australis, Hearth, and Silver Lily. Clarendon Handicap Alpine, and Kiloney set a solid pace in the Clarendon Handicap and led along the hack They were still in charge coming round the top, with Stewart and Night Robe prominent in a strung-out field. Kiloney led Alpine into the straight, where the latter came again and won from Night Robe, who drew up to beat the tiring Kiloney. Royoney was fourth, and then came Salary, Vafort, and Pay Book.
