LAND FOR HOUSING

CORSTORPHINE SUBDIVISION PLANS FOR STATE PROJECT A further application has been made by the Government Housing Department to the City Council for its consent to the plans for the proposed subdivision ol land at Corstorphine. In its report which will be consider, ed by the City Council on Monday night, the Works Committee points out that the council has already consented to a portion of this subdivision, comprising the construction of an extension of Middleton road with connecting streets to Hillhead road and with 50 building allotments fronting them. Provision has now been made for a further extension of Middleton road to the city boundary and thence to join a rural road in Taieri County, together with five further roads and cul-de-sacs, making provision for a total of 289 building sites. Committee’s Recommendations

The committee has recommended that the portion of the subdivision scheme lying within the city boundary be approved, subject to the following conditions:— , , 1. The streets shown on the plan to be constructed to the standard specification prepared by the city engineer and approved by the council, such construction to be carried out at the expense of the Housing Department. 2. The cul-de-sac No. 10 entering from Corstorphine road to be reduced in width from 44 feet to 40 feet with a 26-feet carriageway. This street will be constructed on steep sidling ground and the request for a reduction in width will reduce the cost of construction materially. Cul-de-sacs Nos. 5 and 6 to be- increased in width from 44 feet to 50 feet, with a carriageway of 26 feet in each case.

3. Provision to be made by the Housing Department in the development of the area for sufficient recreation reserve for the whole of the subdivision.

4. Detailed proposals of foul and stormwater drainage to be submitted to the council for consideration. Inclusion in City Concerning the balance of the area situated within the Taieri County, the committee recommends that the department be advised that this has been tentatively approved on the same .conditions as to construction of footways, roads, etc., subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the Taieri County Council in regard to adjustments in the boundaries in order •to include this area within the city, which will require to provide all the necessary services. At the request of the Taieri County Council a sub-committee, consisting of the chairman of the Works Committee (Cr L. J. Ireland), the town clerk and the city engineer, has been appbinted to confer with the County Council, the Green Island Borough Council and the Housing Department on the subject of boundary adjustments and also the question of the formation of the existing rural road passing through the subdivision.
